Now is the time to start preparing your garden for the coming Spring season. With mild weather we can see the early signs of emerging flowering bulbs. A real motivator to getting started.
Spending time now preparing your garden will help you to maximise the enjoyment when Spring arrives.
Perennial plants will now need cutting back to the base to clear old and dead top growth which is not only unsightly but is the ideal habitat for pests and disease.
If the ground is workable, now is the time to lift and divide overcrowded herbaceous perennials then replant. Unsure which of your plants can be divided? Why not treat yourself to one of the many gardening books available in store, which have all the information you need. Alternatively, our experts are always on hand to assist and advise.
Mix in some well-rotted manure or garden compost as you lightly folk over the top soil of your beds. To encourage plants into growth add in some general plant feed or fertilizer.
Now is a good time to sow seeds of some annual and perennial plants to get a head start on an early display.
Clear away the remains of old crops from last year, dig over the soil and mix in garden compost or well rotted manure to improve your soil.
Plant new Rhubarb crowns now, and force existing crowns into growth to encourage young tender stems for a tasty early crop, by covering with large upturned pots or by using a traditional clay Rhubarb forcer.

With the current mild weather, the lawn care season can begin this month. Scatter worn casts and remove any remaining leaves and debris with a rake or besom broom before they get walked into the lawn.
Mowing your lawn now could cause damage to the grass so wait until March. If the weather is mild now is a great time to lay new turf and begin preparing the soil for sowing lawn seed next month.
Spring clean your greenhouse before you start to fill it with seed trays and seedlings. Wash all frames, glass and staging inside and out, with warm soapy water or Jeyes Fluid.
Greenhouses containing growing plants should be ventilated during milder days, to prevent the build up of humidity and toxic fumes from paraffin heaters.
Growing your own vegetables is so easy and can easily be achieved even in the smallest of gardens by using the borders tubs and containers on your patio. Sow little and often to extend your cropping period.
Why not try growing your seeds in a seed tray on the window sill or place in one of the many propagators available and get a head start on the season.
Grow your own Summer bedding plants for planted containers and hanging baskets, easy to grow on a sunny window sill or heated greenhouse.
Pinch out the tips of each plant once they are around 5cm, this will encourage these young plants to produce side shoots ensuring good strong bushy plants and in most cases increase the flowering.
